❤️Why You'll Love this Recipe
- Easy to make
- Delicious
- Cost-effective: Of all homemade plant-based milks, oat milk is one of the least expensive options. Nuts and seeds can be expensive, and (depending on where you live and shop) a 42-ounce container of rolled oats can cost around $4 to $6.
📝Ingredient Notes
- Rolled oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats yield the best results. I recommend using only rolled oats to avoid slimy oat milk.
- Ice cold water: I use water straight from my Brita in the refrigerator. If you don't have one, just store 5 cups of water in the fridge until it's ice cold.
- Pure maple syrup: NOT pancake syrup! Add 2 to 3 tablespoons or to taste to get the desired sweetness. You can also use honey. I would start with 1 or 2 tablespoons and add to taste. Homemade oat milk is very bland without a sweetener, and honey has a very distinct taste that can shine through if you use too much.
🔪Equipment
- Blender
- Nut milk bag (or fine mesh strainer): I purchased my nut milk bag from Amazon for about $13, but you can find others for as little as $7.
🥛How to Make The BEST Oat Milk Recipe
- Place the rolled oats and cold water in a blender. Blend for about 10 to 20 seconds, depending on your blender. Start with 10 seconds and work your way up in 5-second increments. Over-blending can make the oat milk slimy. If you have a high-speed blender, 10 seconds should be plenty of time.
2. Pour the milk into a pitcher or carafe, and rinse out the blender. Place a nut milk bag over the blender, and strain the oat milk. If there's a lot of thick pulp in the bottom of the blender, I discard it rather than strain it.
3. Be very gentle while straining and do NOT squeeze the bag. This can cause the milk to be slimy. Gently apply pressure to strain the oat milk. You can either save the oat pulp for other uses or discard it. Then add the vanilla, pure maple syrup, and a pinch of salt, and give it a quick blend to combine.
4. Rinse out the pitcher or carafe it was previously poured in, and pour it back in one final time for storing. Shake before serving. Enjoy!
🧊Storing
Oat milk will last in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
✅Tips to Avoid Slimy Oat Milk
- Do not over-blend: Only blend the water and oats for 10 to 20 seconds, depending on your blender. Start with 10 and work your way up in 5-second increments to be safe.
- Do not squeeze the nut milk bag: Squeezing the bag will release more of the starches, giving the oat milk a slimy and gross consistency. I leave a little bit of liquid in the pulp to avoid squeezing it out.
- Use rolled oats: Rolled oats are less processed so the starches aren't broken down as much as other types of oats such as steel cut or quick oats.
- Do not soak the oats: Soaking the oats will make your oat milk slimy. So it's best to use dry oats.

Yes. You can use a food processor, but a good high-speed blender will give the best results.
Yes. For savory recipes, I would omit the vanilla and pure maple syrup. Some homemade oat milks can get slimy when they are heated, but I have not experienced that with this recipe.

Homemade oat milk does not froth well because oats do not contain very much fat or protein, which is needed to create a nice frothy milk. However, store-bought versions have thickeners and stabilizers which help it foam and not turn slimy when heated.
Oats are naturally gluten-free, but they are sometimes cross-contaminated. So if you are sensitive to gluten, you'll want to find a brand that is certified gluten-free.
👍Ways to Enjoy Homemade Oat Milk
Homemade oat milk is great for baking, smoothies, a bowl of cereal, Chocolate Banana Milkshakes, Oat Milk Pancakes, an iced version of this Vanilla Matcha Latte, coffee creamer, and so much more!
