    Healthy Vegan Chocolate Milk

    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This healthy vegan chocolate milk is sweet and chocolatey just as a classic chocolate milk should be. It's refined sugar free with a pure and delicious taste you won't be able to get enough of. A beverage that's even perfect for your little ones who love chocolate milk.

A glass bottle of vegan chocolate milk with a red straw on a wooden cutting board with two alike bottles behind it.

This is the best homemade vegan chocolate milk recipe because even though it doesn't contain any syrup, it tastes just as delicious, if not better than what you can buy from the store. It's even quick to make as it's made with just 3 simple ingredients and takes just a few minutes of preparation.

Ingredients for healthy vegan chocolate milk.

    🍫Ingredients

    • Homemade almond milk is preferred because it has the most pure and luscious taste in comparison to store bought milk. The taste is completely different and it really makes this recipe perfect.
    • Cacao powder- instead of using a chocolate syrup that's high in sugar and other processed ingredients, this chocolate almond milk recipe is made with cocoa powder/cacao powder.
    • Dates provide a delicious natural sweetness. They also have great health benefits.

    🥛Substitutions

Almond milk- in place of homemade almond milk, you can use any other unsweetened/plain milk that you enjoy the taste of.

Dates- sometimes instead of using dates, I like to use 1-2 teaspoons of 100% pure maple syrup.

Cacao powder- I like to use cacao powder because it's less processed and contains more antioxidants. However, regular cocoa powder is perfectly okay!

    📝Instructions

Pour your homemade almond milk, cacao powder and dates into a high-speed blender.

Next, blend until the bits of dates are completely blended. It should be a smooth, and not chunky, mixture. This process is super easy with a vitamix blender. It should take about 30 seconds on full speed. If you don't have a vitamix, then use what high-speed blender you have. It may just take a little longer to break up the dates!

To keep the milk and cacao powder from separating, pour it into a small pot and let it heat up over medium heat. Keep whisking and, right before it comes to a light boil, remove it from the heat. Then continue to whisk a couple more times.

Allow it to cool down and then transfer into milk jars, or whatever glass jars you have to store them. Refrigerate until nice and cold. You may still have to give it a little shake after long periods of sitting, but not like you will if you choose not to heat it.

    Enjoy!

    ✅Pro Tips

    • I use medjool dates because they are much softer and easier for the blender to break up.
    • If you don't think your blender can easily break the dates up, try soaking them in boiling hot water for about 30 minutes to help them soften.
    • If the milk boils any, it will thicken some as it cools in the refrigerator. If this happens, just add some more almond milk before drinking and shake it to combine.

    ❓Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best non-dairy milk for vegan chocolate milk?

The answer to this is that it comes down to preference. Choose any milk that you enjoy the taste of. Options range from soy milk to coconut milk (in the carton, not canned), oat milk, cashew milk, almond milk and so on.

Can I make vegan chocolate milk without a blender?

You can. You should use 100% pure maple syrup instead of dates if you are not using a blender. In this case, you will heat the almond milk over the stove in a small pot. Add in the cacao powder and maple syrup, and whisk until evenly combined. Remove it from the heat before it comes to a light boil and then whisk it a few more times, making sure it's well combined. Allow it to cool and then transfer into milk jars to refrigerate.

How long can I keep vegan chocolate milk?

This depends on the non-dairy milk you are using. If you are using my homemade almond milk, the answer is up to a week. If you are using a store-bought milk, check the shelf life of that milk on it's label and it should typically keep as long as it says on the carton.

    Equipment

    • High speed blender
    • Milk bottles

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup homemade almond milk
    • 1 teaspoon cacao powder
    • 1-2 pitted dates or pure maple syrup (to taste)

    Instructions

    • Place the almond milk, dates and cacao powder in a high-speed blender.
    • For a subtle sweetness, use 1 date. For more sweetness, use 2 dates.
    • Blend until there's no pieces of dates left behind and the mixture is completely smooth (this takes about 30 seconds on full speed in a vitamix blender. If your blender cannot smooth out the dates you can always strain the chocolate milk or just use pure maple syrup).
    • To keep the milk and cacao powder from separating, pour it into a small pot and let it heat up over medium heat. Keep whisking and, right before it comes to a light boil, remove it from the heat. Then continue to whisk a couple more times.
Be careful not to let it boil or the milk can foam over and even start to thicken in the refrigerator.
    • Allow it to cool down and then transfer into milk jars, or whatever glass jars you have to store them. You may still have to give it a little shake after long periods of sitting, but not like you do if you choose not to heat it.
    • Refrigerate until it's nice and cold. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • For a deeper chocolate flavor, add ½ teaspoon more of cocoa powder.
    • If your dates are not soft, soak them in hot boiling water for about 30 minutes to help soften them before blending.
    • If the milk boils any, it will thicken some as it cools in the refrigerator. If this happens, just add some more almond milk before drinking and shake it to combine.
