❤️Why You'll Love this Recipe
- Quick and easy: This recipe only requires 3 ingredients and takes about 30 minutes or less to make.
- Cheaper than edible arrangements AND dairy-free: Edible arrangements have a few vegan options but none of them have chocolate. This means their chocolate-covered strawberries are not part of the vegan arrangements. Making them yourself is way more budget-friendly and gives you more decadent options.
- Perfect for special occasions: When I think of chocolate-covered strawberries, I think of Valentine's Day because they're such a beautiful (and even romantic) dessert. But because most people love them, they really make a great dessert for any occasion.
- Healthier dessert: Strawberries are a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C. Chocolate (more specifically, dark chocolate) when eaten in moderation, can also offer some benefits! UCI Health has an article dedicated to chocolate- covered strawberries and their health benefits.
📝Ingredient Notes
- Dairy-free chocolate chips: I use Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips. Nestle Toll House Semi-Sweet Allergen-Free Morsels are chocolate chips that are dairy-free as well. When making chocolate-covered strawberries, many recommend using premium baking chocolate. The Endangered Species Premium Oat Milk Baking Chips (55% cocoa dark chocolate) is dairy-free. Other good brands are Ghirardelli Non-Dairy Dark Chocolate Premium Baking Chips or Lindt's non-dairy chocolates like their Oat Milk Chocolate Bar. Their other chocolate bars that are 70% dark chocolate and up are also vegan.
- Strawberries: Before buying, check the container for any rotting berries. Ideally, the strawberries should be red and fully ripe without white spots at the top.
- Coconut oil: I like to use coconut oil because it makes the melted chocolate smoother and hardens more easily at room temperature.
🍓Substitutions
- Dairy-free chocolate chips: You can use vegan white chocolate, vegan milk chocolate, or dark chocolate. Above, I've mentioned other brands of dairy-free chocolate, but if you're looking to make vegan white chocolate-covered strawberries, Enjoy Life makes dairy-free white chocolate chips. Sometimes I can find it at my local Walmart, otherwise, I have to purchase it online.
- Strawberries: If you have leftover chocolate, you can make other types of vegan chocolate-covered fruit. Other great options would be fresh blueberries, bananas, or even orange slices.
- Coconut oil: If you can't use coconut oil, just leave it out.
🥥Variations
After dipping the strawberries into the melted chocolate, you can immediately dip them into toppings. These toppings include
- Vegan sprinkles
- Crushed nuts
- Finely crushed Oreos
- Shredded coconut flakes
After dipping them, line them on the baking sheet and refrigerate to harden.
🥣Equipment
- Microwave safe bowl or double boiler
- Baking tray lined with parchment paper or wax paper
🔪How to Make Vegan Chocolate Covered Strawberries
- Wash the strawberries, then pat them dry with a kitchen cloth. Next, dry them individually with paper towels to ensure they're completely dry.
2. In a microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave for 45 seconds then stir. Microwave for another 30 seconds and stir until smooth. Be careful microwaving it too long or you'll run the risk of burning the chocolate.
3. Hold the strawberries by the green stem and dip each berry in the melted chocolate. Let any excess chocolate drip off, then place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or wax paper.
4. Refrigerate the berries until the chocolate is set (about 15 minutes).
5. Optionally drizzle the remaining melted chocolate on the rest of the berries using a piping bag. Refrigerate for another 10 minutes or until the chocolate is set.
🧊Storing
Store leftover chocolate-covered strawberries on a baking tray (or plate) covered in plastic wrap for up to 2 days in the refrigerator. For best quality, it's recommended to eat them within 24 hours.
✅Pro Tips
- Dry the strawberries REALLY well after washing them: Any water/moisture left on the strawberries will keep the chocolate from sticking to the strawberries. Use paper towels to dry each strawberry individually to ensure they all come out dry.
- Use high-quality dairy-free chocolate: I tend to use regular dairy-free chocolate chips because that's usually what I have on hand. However, for a more luxurious chocolate coating, use dairy-free premium baking chocolate chips or chopped dairy-free chocolate bars to melt.
- Avoid storing the chocolate-covered strawberries in an airtight container: An airtight container will trap moisture inside. Excess moisture keeps the chocolate from sticking to the strawberry. When the berries "sweat", they drip out red strawberry juice, which also isn't desirable for chocolate-covered strawberries.
